Popham Alpacas - the home of Pure Cornish Alpaca

Alpaca Care Courses

We started with alpacas in 2002 after we sold our ponies. We didn't know much then but over the intervening years we have learn't a great deal. We have been very successful in the show rings and in recent years have won Supreme at the Nationals in both Huacaya and Suri. So you could say we know our "chilli" from our "beans". But not only have we learn't how to improve quality through selective breeding but have also gained an extensive amount of knowledge about alpaca care. We would like to pass this knowledge onto you.

We have 3 courses available:

  • Basic husbandry including body scoring, toenail clipping etc
  • Worming, vaccinating and vitamin supplements
  • Nutritional requirements
  • Halter training
  • Farm requirements, fencing and shelter
  • Refreshments and Q&A session

Advanced Alpaca Care (full day)

  • Basic alpaca care as above plus…..
  • Reproduction and birthing
  • Neonatal care
  • Weaning
  • Genetics, sire choice and breeding
  • Fleece and conformation evaluation

Alpaca Lifestyle (staying in Tamar Log Cabin)

This is an opportunity to experience what it would be like to be an alpaca breeder/farmer/owner.

On this course we would invite you to join us for a day and a half, during this time we would introduce you to our alpacas, go through both the Basic and Advanced courses but also have you join us in our day to day chores whether this be feeding, husbandry or even our "breeding" clinics. Be prepared for early mornings, mud and alpaca jostling!

We have accomodation available in our Tamar Log Cabin. The price includes a one night stay, arriving after lunch on the first day. We will introduce you to our alpacas in the afternoon and run through certain aspects of the course. We will supply you with breakfast for you to prepare yourself. There are many local eateries for your evening meal which we can book for you and arrange a taxi if required. Otherwise you may wish to cater for yourself as the lodge is fully equipped. The next morning sees an early start with feeding and husbandry checks then we will carry on through the day and complete the course hopefully finishing around 3.30pm. Lunch on the second day is included. If you wish it may be possible to extend your stay and use the log cabin a base to explore Cornwall. Please discuss details and costs with us.
